Bulletin 75 has mailed!
This issue is dedicated to the southern portion La Crosse Division, and 99.11% of the illustrations in the 100-page issue came from the BRHS Archives, Lake States Historical Association Archives, or the Library of Congress! The remainder came from 22 different collections. While not a definitive history, it provides an overview of materials available to serious researchers willing to invest time and effort in finding and sharing them.
This story begins with a brief early historical overview of the line, followed by station-by-station coverage beginning at North La Crosse and down the line into Illinois to Galena Junction. Coverage includes alignment charts; photos of depots, facilities, and businesses; drawings; maps; and ICC valuation details from the early 1920s. We cover some of the passenger and freight trains over the line, including the banana traffic off the Illinois Central. We take a look at the last days of steam and the rise of early diesel motive power. There are more articles to come with material not included in this issue.
Closing this issue, we share CB&Q photographer Fred Lehmann’s photos and descriptions of the process of reballasting and resurfacing tracks using the Mannix Plow and Sled just west of Galesburg, as an example of what was done along many segments of the LAX Division lines in 1957.
