keyword Search
for Images

There are three separate web pages used in this feature. It is the most powerful method available for locating images from a photo database.

First Page: The use of a 'Keyword /string' is the most common technique to use in search engines. The keyword maybe single word. The search engine will look for that word in multiple fields in the database. If multiple words such as "Red Oak" or "EMD 456" are used, these words are not separated and searched individually with an 'and' or with an 'or' condition. They will be searched for as a single expression or string of letters and spaces.

You can further limit your search results by including one of the filters such as the 23 categories, color palette or the merger date. For example, if you are only interest in photos of the Aurora depot, you can enter Aurora as a keyword and then checking the box next to Depots and Stations.

Please note that keywords are not required. You can simply search by clicking on just one or more categories, and skipping the keyword.
Once you make your choice of search options and click on Submit, you will be directed to the second page.

Second Page: This web page displays mid-size photos for all of the records you searching found. The page will display up to 60 images as a set. Three columns and 20 rows. A forward arrow will take you to the next set of 60 images. By clicking on any of the images you will be directed to the third page in this feature.

Third Page: This web page shows you a full screen view of the photo. Below most images you will find interesting information about the photo. On the sides above and below each image are arrows that will take you to the next or the previous image in retrieved set of photos. The menu at the top of the page has a link to return to the second page with the mid-size image from your search. This web page not only displays information about the photo, it can also be used to add and update the information for this photo. To add or modify the information just type in the addition or changes in any of the 12 text fields, check boxes or selection lists and click on the Submit button. You changes/additions will be saved.

Add New Photos to the Library
If you have historical CB&Q photos that you would like to add to the BRHS collection, this is the feature designed to let you do that. Nearly all of the BRHS photo collection has been supplied by members.

When looking at his web page you can see that there is a lot of information that can be included on the database for each photo. That information is what makes the keyword search and other features so powerful for members seeking ‘Q’ photos.

Enter as much of the form information as you can. Certain fields are required.

All image uploads record the BRHS member's number on the photo database record.  Email notices of each photo uploaded are sent to the BRHS photo editors along with links to the image file. All photos uploaded must be your photos or photos that do not have copyright issues. If in doubt, limit the exposure by selecting the Member Only Viewing option. This status can then be reviewed. These steps are necessary is to protect the collection from any inappropriate photos being added.

The features below are administrative tools and only accessible by BRHS Photo Editor Members.

Find Duplicate Images

There are cases where acquired images come with duplicates. To help find and remove them is what this feature is designed to do. It will not delete them. Rather it will use the database system to report possible duplications and display them for one of the BRHS photo editors to handle.
First question for the Photo Editor; is this reported image dup actually a dup. Second if two or more images of the same are discovered, (dups) which one should be removed?
First Page: Two methods are offer to locate duplicates. Some duplicates are found with one method but not the other. Select a method and click on Submit.

Second Page:  The next pages will display the images of potential duplicates. The title and description are show along with the image to help quickly gage which of the likely dups might be the one you could delete. Click on one and a third web page will appear.

Third Page. The third page is the standard View and Editor web page. As was said above, images are not deleted using this feature. They are inspected for being dups and when determined to be dups you can use Check Box Z located at the bottom right side of the page to mark them for deletion.   Then use the Delete Images feature to delete them.

Delete Photos From the Library

There are three separate web pages used in presenting this admin feature.

Second Page: The second page is a safety page. It displays the image and the

information about the image that you selected. If may turn out to be a different image than what you wanted. The wrong duplicate for example. To distinguish this page from other viewing pages the image is outlined in red.

If it is the image you want to delete, then click on the red button at the bottom.

Third Page: This is a confirmation page. It lets you know the status of the this action. It tells you if the database record, full size image and the thumbnail image have been successfully deleted.

Thumbnail or Mid-Size Images

Second Page: This second page displays a full size version of the image and also of the thumbnail, if there is one. The purpose of this page is to verify that the you have entered in the right photo number before you create a thumbnail. Click the Submit button at the bottom of the page.

Third Page: This page is you confirmation notice that a thumbnail image has be successfully created.

Update the Picture of the Day

The left side-bar on most of the BRHS web pages contains a 'photo of the day'. This admin tool is used to change of update the images that will be shown on each day of the year.

First Page: This page lists the images that are scheduled to be displayed on each of the 366 days of the year. The list can be sorted by date or by photo number. If the list is sorted by photo number, any photo this is in the list more than once has a red background to the thumbnail image.

To change the picture for a given day, click on the thumbnail image or the photo number currently shown for this day.

Second Page: This page displays the current image for that selected day. In the form below this image has a field for you to enter the photo number for the image you want to use for this data. A radio button lets you choose if you want to allow this image to be used more than once. If you select NO, the system will refuse to change the image if it finds that this image is already in use as a picture of the day.

When you click on the Submit button the new image you chose will be set for that day of the year. The new image will be displayed. If it does not display the new image it is often do to a caching problem.

Manage Differences Between
Database and IPTC Data

There is only one web page used in this audit/maintenance feature, but it has two views.

Details about each image are stored both on a database and also within the jpg image file. Due to processing errors, it is possible that the two sets of data may become different and that can't be allowed.

This feature was created to let administrators audit or monitor images to verify the two sets of data are in sync.

First View: When first opened, this feature will display a form to enter the photo number of an image.

Second View: When a photo number is entered and the user clicks on the Submit button, two sets of details about the image will be displayed.

The details from the database are seen on the left, and the details from the jpg image file are seen on the right.

When there is a different the user may correct the one that is wrong, and click on SAVE.

Reconcile Image Files
and Database

There is only one web page used in this audit/maintenance feature.

Processing errors can happen, and over time it is possible to have a full image file without a thumbnail image or a database record without the corresponding image.

This report or auditing feature was created to monitor this and display any such inconsistence that occur.

With this audit feature, administrators can correct any errors reported.
